Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal was punched by a disgruntled party member at a road show of an AAP candidate in Dakshinpuri on Friday. Kejriwal left right after the attack. The accused has been identified as 19-year-old Abdul Wahid, a resident of south-east Jamia Nagar. He was beaten up by Kejriwal’s supporters before being handed over to the police.

The incident comes a week after Kejriwal was punched by a man claiming to be a supporter of social activist Anna Hazare during a rally in Haryana’s Bhiwani district.

On Friday, Kejriwal was travelling in an open jeep with South Delhi constituency candidate Col Devindra Sehrawat when the incident took place around 12:30 pm.

He was shaking hands with supporters when Abdul stepped ahead with a garland. To the surprise of Kejriwal and his supporters, Abdul punched Kejriwal and tried to slap him.

Abdul was immediately overpowered by AAP supporters and beaten up. He was handed over to the police where he told interrogators that he was unhappy about Kejriwal’s silence over the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots. “We have received a complaint, but have not registered any case yet. We will take legal action against the accused,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East) P Karunakaran.

Kejriwal blamed the BJP for the assault and said, “A few people are ready to go to any extent to become prime minister. Let them do whatever they are doing.”
