In the first attack since Lok Sabha election dates were announced, two Jammu and Kashmir policemen were killed when militants attacked the house of a ruling National Conference (NC) leader in Khrew area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Sunday.

However, both the militants who carried the attack were later killed by security forces when they were fleeing along with the weapons of the slain policemen.

Police said that militants fired indiscriminately at the residence of provisional committee member of NC youth wing and organizer for South Kashmir Yawar Masoodi in Khrew, Pampore, 20 kms from here, killing two policemen posted as his personal security guards.

Masoodi, who was present in his residence when the attack was carried, however, escaped unhurt.

A senior police officer told Deccan Herald the militants believed to be two in number, managed to barge into the premises of the house but were stopped by the personal guards of Masoodi after which they resorted to indiscriminate firing, critically injuring the policemen.

The slain policemen, identified as constable Abdul Hamid and constable Vinod Kumar were rushed to the nearby hospital. They succumbed to their injuries on way. No militant outfit had claimed the responsibility till last reports.
