CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta, who initiated the discussion in the House, accused the BJP of meticulously planning the demolition of Babri Masjid on December 6, 1992. Dasgupta said he  was ashamed to say the mosque was brought down after meticulous planning. The CPI leader said the then ruling Congress government at the Centre had failed in  protecting the mosque.

BJP President Rajnath Singh, who opened the debate for his party, described Liberhan Commission report “ historically, socially and legally incorrect.” He wondered as how the commission termed disputed structure at Ayodhya “a Mosque.”

The discussion was originally slated for December 1 but was postponed after the Samajwadi Party insisted that copies of report should be made available in Hindi. The Rajya Sabha is scheduled to take up the report for discussion on December 9 and 10.  The BJP president said the demolition of the disputed structure at Ayodhya was the  result of public anger and asserted that it would build a Ram temple at the same site for “national justice”, as it slammed the Liberhan Commission report as “a political document” which is “biased”.

Singh said in the Lok Sabha the report was “a bundle of grave errors” and its intent appeared to be “pre-decided” and aimed at “character assassination” of certain political leaders and parties.

The Commission has reached “bizarre conclusions” by making  adverse comments against former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and senior leaders L K Advani and M M Joshi, he said.  SP leader Mulayam Singh Yadav charged the Congress and BJP being in complicity with each other.

He claimed that during his chief Ministership in Uttar Pradesh he had  ordered firing on “Kar Sevaks” to prevent  further disaster. He also accused Shiv Sena of  creating disturbances in Mumbai.

Sharad Yadav of JD (U) took on the Congress government of that  time and wondered as how it could not know the seriousness of the situation over a long period. He doubted the “secular credentials” of the party. The Congress member Salman Khurshid said  the people have rejected parties responsible for escalating communal divide and tension.
Answering BJP leader’s charge that a respected saint like Devrah Baba was also listed by the Liberhan Commission as those culpable for the demolition of  Babri Structure, Khurshid said that could be a mistake.

Briefly intervening in the debate, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram clarified that the Liberhan Commission was constituted to ascertain events leading to demolition of Babri Mosque.  The intervention came when the BJP leader said the Commission did not throw  any new light on the events that led to the demolition at Ayodhya. The debate will  continue on Tuesday.
