All the world's a stage

As part of the contest, a drama called Swatantra Nimitham was staged, which featured the sufferings of people who lived in Punjab province during the partition of India and Pakistan. The performance received compliments from the audience and also bagged the second prize. The play was organised by Shrusti, the theatre club of Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering  Shrusti was formed four months back and Swatantra Nimitham was its first performance. “Actually, we did not have a theatre group in our college. But when I heard about the competition, I took the initiative to form a group with the help of my friends.

Accordingly, we held auditions for artistes. The response was poor and only five students were interested. Later, I requested my friends to join the club and somehow we arranged for the performers,” says Anil, who is one of the founders of the club.

After teaming up the students, the team organised a 15-day-workshop to train the students in theatrical skills. “The workshop has turned out to be a helpful exercise. It was managed by professional theatre people and consisted of games and tricks to achieve greater concentration,” beams Anirudh, student co-ordinator of the club.

For Swatantra Nimitham, they roped in Sandeep Pai, a  theatre person as their director. Under his guidance, Shrusti succeeded to clinch the prize. Now, the club is preparing for the VTU fest, which will be hosted by their college. The theatre club also has a mime team called Bachelors of Enjoyment. The team has many talented actors. “We have a balanced team, which can optimise our efforts. The team consists of people from diverse backgrounds and having diverse interests. That has helped us come up with different and vivid themes.

Miming as a performance art helps us to bring out our creativity positively but sadly we don't have any girls in our team that has been restricting our experiments,” says Anirudh.
