Leopard, deer pelts worth Rs 5 lakh seized

The accused were arrested  while they were trying to sell the pelts in front of the KSRTC bus stand, said Superintendent of Police Dr A Subrahmanyeshwara Rao here on Tuesday.

Based on a tip-off, a team led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Amith Singh conducted the raid and arrested Veeresh Heremutt (27) and Nisar Himam Sab (26), residents of Anevatti hobli in Shimoga district, Dr A Subrahmanyeshwara Rao said.

On interrogation, they revealed that they also possessed three deer horns, which was hid in a government land at Loknalli, Shimoga. Based on the information, the DK police visited the spot and seized the three horns worth Rs 50,000.

ASP Amith Singh, Mangalore (East) Inspector N Niranjanraj Aras, Urwa station PSI Suresh, personnel Narendra, Ajay, Rajaram and Sunil were part of the team.

A case has been registered against the two under column 9, 11, 39, 49 (B), (C), 51 of The Wild Life (Prevention) Act, 1972.
