57 pc polling recorded in Uttar Pradesh

An estimated 57 per cent electorate exercised their franchise on polling for the 14 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh. The polling, this time was around nine per cent more than the previous time.

Barring a few stray incidents, the polling was reported to be peaceful and there was no report of any untoward incidents from anywhere.

The Lucknow Lok Sabha constituency, where BJP chief Rajnath Singh was in the fray, recorded 55 per cent polling while the Raebareli seat from where Congress chief Sonia Gandhi was contesting, recorded around 52 per cent.

Jhansi seat from where senior BJP leader Uma Bharti was in the fray, recorded around 63 per cent while Kanpur recorded around 53 per cent polling.

Wednesday's polling sealed the fate of several important leaders, including the Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, BJP president Rajnath Singh, Union ministers Jitin Prasada, Sriprakash Jaiswal, Pradeep Jain Aditya and BJP leaders Murli Manohar Joshi and Uma Bharti.

The seats where polling was held on Wednesday included Raebareli, Lucknow, Unnao, Jhansi, Kanpur, Dhaurahara, Hamirpur, Banda, Barabanki, Jalaun, Mishrikh Sitapur, Fatehpur and Mohanlalganj.
