Demand growing for organic milk in B'lore

Last Updated 30 April 2014, 19:45 IST

Bangaloreans are becoming health conscious, especially youth and migratory population. The demand for organic food and organic milk is increasing, despite the cost. The City consumes around 10,000 litre of organic milk everyday.

A large number of families on the outskirts and niche areas are shifting to organic milk and its by-products. Demand is high among migratory population and frequent travellers as organic milk is popular in western countries as is safe for consumption, said Akshaykalpa Farms and Foods Limited Managing Director G N S Reddy, who supplies over 3,000 litre of organic milk to Bangalore. The rest of the supply is made by various smaller firms.

“Since Bangalore houses large migratory population, demand for organic milk has increased. Last year, we supplied 400 litre. This year its over 3,000 litre. Talks are on with corporate firms and hotels, whose clients demand it,” he said.

Akshaykalpa supplies milk through 80 agents door-to-door to Bangaloreans and also to various malls. Their unit is in Tiptur (150 km from Bangalore) and milk is supplied at four degree Celsius temperature.

Ananth A, Jayanagar resident said: “I was told by one of my colleagues to try it.
Though there is no significant difference in taste compared to other milk we consumed. I believe this is more healthier as it is untreated.” Seema, another resident said, milk is fresh as it is not packed. There have been no side-effects after consumption too.

However, the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) has no plans of introducing organic milk or tying up with other firms. KMF MD A S Premnath said: “Since there are no cooperative farms supplying organic milk through organised sector, we have not tied up with companies, despite supplying around 10,000 litre to Bangalore by various companies.”
