BU deploys mouse to catch copy cats

Further the varsity has increased the library budget from Rs 70 lakh to Rs 1.5 crore to upgrade its existing facilities. The decisions, along with a series of other decisions, were taken at a Library Committee in a meeting held recently.

A “sophisticated software,” which will detect copying and in turn check plagiarism in the thesis or any dissertation work. The software will work on the basis of detecting keywords, title theme and substances. Meanwhile, the committee has allocated sufficient funds for various categories like book purchase, journal subscription, establishment of language laboratory and the like.

The Committee has also decided to collect an annual fee of Rs 20 and Rs 50 from the students of government and private colleges respectively. A separate library account will also be opened wherein all the fees and collection will be deposited. A future system which will involve the sharing of books and journals between colleges under Bangalore university as inter-library loan was also discussed at the meeting.

Some of the other important decisions made at the meeting also involved digitisation of all rare books, publications and thesis and increasing the library timings to 24 hours for the benefit of both the students and teachers. It was also proposed to establish a centre to take up competitive exams for students after completion of their PG courses with the aid of DVDs and CDs.  The committee has also recommended the establishment of a language laboratory in English and other languages to help rural students meet challenges of qualifying examinations such as TOEFL.
