The visiting team coach Trevor Bayliss said they were unsure of Malinga's participation in the series opener.
"Malinga is not feeling at his best. We will have to wait and see how he is tomorrow," Bayliss said.
Hard-hitting batsman Yuvraj Singh is also doubtful starter from the Indian side as he has suffered a finger injury.
The left-hander injured the little finger of his left hand while fielding during the second Twenty20 match in Mohali on Saturday.

Muralitharan, who did not take part in the team's practice session this morning, was rushed to the Sterling Hospital where Dr Samrat Buddh conducted various medical tests including X-rays and CT scan of his finger, Medical Director of the hospital Dr Kamal Parikh said.
Parikh said the injury was not serious and the veteran spinner has been given pain relief injection.
Muralitharan's medical reports have been sent to the Sri Lankan team physio, Parikh added.
Muralitharan had missed the team's two Twenty20 Internationals against India following a bruised ligament injury on his fingers.

Both the sides will decide about their final XI only before the start of the match.
