Garbage mess: Mayor seeks help from Spain

Last Updated 11 June 2014, 19:55 IST

Mayor B S Satyanarayana held a video conference with the Spanish authorities on Wednesday evening to find a solution to the mounting garbage problem in the City.

The Spain-based firm Urbaser Limited is said to be processing garbage in a place much smaller than the landfill site given to garbage processing units in Mandur, Mavallipura and other places around Bangalore.

The firm reportedly told Satyanarayana that 10-12 acres of land is enough to process at least 2,500 tonnes of waste to convert it into organic waste and compost. The Mayor said he would hold a few more meetings and if the outcome is successful, the BBMP may take their services to deal with Bangalore garbage too.

Satyanarayana said that prohibitory orders under section 144 of the CrPC imposed in Mandur would be lifted once Chief Minister Siddaramaiah returned from Delhi.

He held out this assurance during a press conference on Wednesday. He admitted that the people of Mandur were outraged over the imposition of prohibitory orders to prevent them from protesting against the landfill site where the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike dumps at least 1,500 tonnes of waste everyday.

Sympathising with the villagers for living with Bangalore waste and the resultant side effects, Mayor said he would not hesitate spending a day there. However, he was elusive about the night halt in the village as suggested by some journalists.

Meanwhile, the Mandur residents have decided to hold a ‘satyagraha’ from Friday if their demands are not met and the Section 144 is not revoked.
