Get ready to pay more for parking

If you are a south Delhi resident, parking your vehicle outside a market may burn a hole in your pocket. The South Delhi Municipal Corporation has proposed a steep hike in the parking rates under its areas. It will soon cost Rs 20 for up to three hours going up by Rs 10 for every additional hour.

At present the rate is Rs 10 for up to 10 hours for four wheelers.

The south civic agency is mulling to impose ‘prohibitive parking charges’ for parking vehicles in ‘non-parking zones’ in areas such as Lajpat Nagar, New Friends Colony, Greater Kailash, South Extension, Rajouri Garden and Tilak Nagar.

A non-parking zone comprises streets outside residential colonies including parks, areas in front of authorised parking places and markets.

As per the proposal, one has to pay a fee of Rs 750 for up to three hours, and Rs 150 for every additional hour.

“A private concessionaire will be engaged for assisting the corporation in collecting in prohibitive parking cahrges,” said South Corporation’s Commissioner Manish Gupta.

The corporation has decided to categorise parking spaces into categories ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’. Category ‘A’ will be premium parking lots where the charges will be higher than the other two categories – ‘B’, which will be normal surface parking areas and ‘C’, multi-level or underground parking lots.

“The parking problem is rampant in Delhi. People in the city have a tendency to park the vehicle right outside the shop. They don’t want to park their cars at mult i-level parking lots and walk a few metres to reach the market,” said Gupta.

“We have kept the rates of category ‘C’ the cheapest to encourage people to park their vehicles there. It’s the economic method of managing the parking woes in the city,” he added.

Category ‘B’ parking lots will cost Rs 75 for up to three hours and Rs 30 for every additional hour to park a car whereas category ‘A’ will cost Rs 100 going up to Rs 50 for every extra hour.

The South Corporation has a total of 80 authorised parking sites under its area.
