Tradition is high fashion now

Tradition is high fashion now

There is something unique about dhotis. Just like a saree has its own ethnic glamour quotient, dhoti too has its own charm. And today, it is not just limited to its traditional style statement but it has taken on a modern and classy avatar.

Not surprising then, that designers cashing on its sudden popularity, are putting their creativity into play and experimenting with the dhoti and making it the ‘most preferred option’ for modern-day grooms.

“There is a new energy which overpowers true traditional look over the modern on the wedding day. Just like the bride, grooms are equally excited about the royal and traditional couture,” says designer Ankur, who has his own range of clothing line Charas.

“Dhotis, these days, are aesthetically designed to enhance the classy look of a modern man. Men love to pair dhotis with sherwanis and Nehru jackets on their wedding day. A popular trend these days is to flaunt dhotis in festive hues, cowl dhotis, drape dhotis and pair it up with a classic Nehru collar sherwani. One can even fashionably accessorise the whole attire with the Mughal mala neckpiece and waist belts,” says Ankur.

But designer Himanshi Gupta, owner of a boutique, believes the fashion of wearing dhotis in wedding has become popular as designers have put their creative touch and have given options to men.

“Now, dhoti has become a style statement. Men have started wearing dhotis instead of pants and churidars. They team it up with sherwanis, kurtas and now even with designer shirts,” says Gupta.

Talking about the new trend of sporting dhotis with shirts, Gupta says, “This trend will be a hit in the coming wedding season. It gives an ethnic, sharp and elegant look to the overall look as expected in the wedding.”

She believes the designer dhoti trend is definitely here to stay.“With the creative elements that designers work on, like creating unique drapes or playing with the colours and fabrics and much more, this is one trend that is going to keep growing,” adds Gupta.
