Indian Coast Guard members rescued fishermen in distress at 10 nautical mile from the coast off Kotepora near Kannur. The place is 45 nautical miles away from Mabgalore.

The fishermen had remained stranded due to gear box failure in their boat for 36 hours. The fishermen had ventured into fishing from Malpe.

The authorities at Coast Guard headquarters here received an SOS around 5 pm on Tuesday from Assistant Director of Fisheries, Malpe intimating that fishing boat Jalajyothi (Sudeshna) was in distress. Immediately ICG Ship Rajdoot sailed for the mission.

The ship arrived in area at 10.55 pm on Tuesday night and began search for the stranded fishing vessel. ICGS Rajdoot established communication with the stranded boat on wireless VHF set and sighted the same around midnight.

The vessel was escorted to the mouth of Mangalore fishing harbour at 8.30 am on Wednesday. The boat was thereafter taken inside the fishing harbour with the help a fishing boat.
