After announcing plans to set up 100 smart cities across the country in the NDA government’s first budget, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday unveiled two new schemes—the Member of Parliament’s Model Village and the Clean India drive.

In his maiden speech from Red Fort, Modi said the new scheme “Sansad Aadarsh Gram Yojana” (MP’s Model Village Scheme) would be launched on the birth anniversary of Jai Prakash Narayan on October 11.

As per the proposal, each MP has to select one village of 3,000-5,000 population in his or her constituency to be developed as model village by 2016, with basic amenities, including drinking water, cleanliness, healthcare and electricity.

The prime minister also said, “There are several schemes named after leaders and former prime ministers. I want to announce a scheme named after the members of Parliament, under which they will adopt and develop one village each in their respective constituencies.”
