A 13-year-old student of a private school in east Delhi’s Mandawali attempted suicide by drinking an antiseptic liquid, allegedly after her family found out that she was being raped by her tutor.

Fortunately, she was rushed to hospital and saved in the nick of time by her family.
Police said the teenager attempted suicide after her family saw some obscene text messages and videos, which the accused had sent to her on WhatsApp.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Ajay Kumar said the accused teacher has been arrested. He, however, declined to give details, citing privacy and identification concerns of the victim.

Police sources said the accused has been identified as 25-year-old Johnson. He had allegedly been subjecting the girl, a student of class seven, to sexual exploitation for the past two years. “Though he used to come home to teach her, sometimes, he would take classes at his house as well,” a police officer said.

On Thursday evening, the girl’s mother discovered Johnson’s lewd messages on her daughter’s phone, and told her husband about them. When the girl’s father asked her, she got scared, locked herself in her room and attempted to kill herself by drinking a bottle of Dettol.

“Her father broke down the door when she didn’t open it. She was then rushed to a private hospital,” the officer added.

Police said they received information about the incident from hospital authorities, and a team was sent to investigate the matter. The team then took the victim’s statement and got her medical examination conducted.

It confirmed sexual assault and a case of rape, which included sections of the Information Technology Act, was registered with Mandawali police station.

“We arrested Johnson from his house almost immediately. Since he used to teach other girls residing in the area, we are now examining whether he was sexually exploiting someone else like the victim in this case too. Investigations are underway,” the officer said.
