Worker buried alive as foundation pit caves in

A construction worker was buried alive while two others were rescued after a portion of a huge foundation pit caved in on them at a construction site on Infantry Road on Monday

.

The victim is Munna M Kumar, 26, from Chhapra district in Bihar. The other two Rajkumar and Sajid are being treated at a hospital, police said.

The construction site where the tragedy took place is owned by retired IPS officer Nazimuddin Shah, while Rajarajeshwari Builders have taken up a project to construct a multi-storey residential structure.

A team of about 15 workers from Bihar had joined the project a month ago and were digging the foundation pit ever since.

Munna, Rajkumar and Sajid were digging at a corner of the pit at 12.45 pm when suddenly a portion of the soil came crashing down on them. Other workers managed to drag Sajid and Rajkumar out, but they could not rescue Munna as he was completely buried.

They called the fire brigade, which rushed its personnel to the spot. Fire fighters pulled out Munna around 2 pm, but he was dead by then, the police said. A case of causing death due to negligence has been registered against Vishwanath, the contractor.
