13 killed as bus, lorry collide in Mulbagal

As many as 13 people were killed and 16 others seriously injured in a head-on collision between a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus bound for Tirupati from Bangalore and a sand laden lorry near Srirangapura in the taluk on Monday.

The victims were identified as Bharati (46), Nagamani (48), Vijayamma (55), Nagesh Babu (40), Narayanamma (50), bus driver Gangadharayya (35), Rajshekhar (12) and Likith Kumar (2).

According to the police, eight passengers were killed on the spot while five others died at the hospital. Seven of the 16 injured were admitted to the government hospital in Mulbagal and nine to the R L Jalappa Hospital in Kolar.Due to the bodies being stuck between the seats of the bus, the emergency team, police and villagers had a tough time removing them. 

People who had gathered at the spot after the accident complained that construction work of pavements by the sides of the road had been going on for a long time.

The delay in the work is the reason for the accident, they said. They added that due to the construction work taking up a lot of space on both the sides of the road, the movement of vehicles had become difficult.

Compensation

KSRTC has announced a compensation of Rs 15,000 each to the next of the kin of the deceased. As per the officials, seven of the dead have been identified. KSRTC chairman Anjum Parvez visited the accident spot. 

According to the preliminary reports, the KSRTC bus was being driven carefully and the fault was on the part of the lorry driver. The officials said that it was a new bus and had only completed 18,000 kilometres.
