Primary and Secondary Education Minister Kimmane Ratnakar on Friday informed that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah would soon hold a meeting to discuss the Supreme Court’s dismissal of the petition filed by Karnataka government seeking a review of its verdict on the medium of instruction in primary schools.

He spoke to reporters on the sidelines of the International Literacy Day events organised by Karnataka State Literacy Mission Authority and the Department of Public Instruction. The minister opined that public examinations should be held for Classes 5 and 8.

Addressing the gathering, he said that the State government was committed to eradicating illiteracy in the State. “Within a span of three to four years, the literacy rates of 20 backward districts of Karnataka will be improved by 80-90 per cent through various literacy programmes. It is not the sole responsibility of the government and the society too should work towards eradicating illiteracy,” he said.
