Just 12.2 per cent (3.64 lakh) workers are women in Delhi’s 8.93 lakh establishments, according to the city’s latest economic census.

About 26.21 lakh (87.8 per cent ) of those employed in city-based enterprises were male worker, it said.

The Census revealed that the North West district offers the least number of employment opportunity, with just 2.81 lakh people in jobs in this area, whereas the central district offers livelihood to the maximum number of 5.76 lakh people in its 1.53 lakh establishments.

About 17.2 per cent establishments are in Central district, 11.9 per cent (1.07 lakh) establishments are in West district, 10.5 per cent (0.94 lakh) in North East, 10.4 per cent (0.93 lakh) in North West and 9.2 per cent (0.82 lakh) in East district. The Sixth Economic Census was conducted in Delhi during February-June 2013 under Central Plan Scheme sponsored by the Union ministry of statistics and programme Implementation.

Its findings showed the number of persons employed in the establishment works out to 29.85 lakh, of which 29.57 lakh are in the urban area and 27,812 in the rural area.
The census took into account people engaged in crop production, plantation, public administration, defence and compulsory social security services.

Employment during the Sixth Economic Census overall registered a negative growth of about 12.22 per cent during the period 2005-2013 as the establishments engaged in public administration (ministries and government offices), defence and compulsory social security activities covered during the last census in 2005 were outside the coverage this time.

The Economic Census mainly gives activity-wise and area-wise head count of enterprises, employment and other main characteristics in numerical terms and their growth over a period of time gives a measure of impact of government policies.

The report showed that the average employment size -  number of workers per enterprise in Delhi is 3.34 as against the all-India average of 2.18 workers per enterprise, Haryana (2.76), Himachal Pradesh (2.32), Punjab (2.36), Uttar Pradesh (2.05), Rajasthan (2.12) and Madhya Pradesh (2.06).
