A man jumped off a flyover to escape from police after he and his accomplice robbed two persons on a motorcycle in south Delhi.

He was caught after he got injured after the jump. His accomplice, who had at that time managed to escape, was nabbed later. The duo was found to be involved in over a dozen known cases of robberies, police said on Wednesday.

A police team was patrolling on Ring Road in Sarai Kale Khan in the wee hours of Sunday when they heard a woman shouting for help. The team rushed to find two men involved in a scuffle with a woman and a man on a motorcycle. One of the men was waving a knife at her, police said.

On seeing policemen at the scene, the two robbers began running on the flyover toward Hazrat Nizamuddin, but were chased. Then one of the robbers jumped off the flyover as police narrowed down on him. A policeman took the victim’s motorcycle and chased this robber while two other policemen ran after his accomplice. The one on foot managed to escape but Anoop, the robber who had jumped, was caught and taken to AIIMS Trauma Centre for treatment. Based on information provided by him, his partner Vicky was nabbed later. They were found to be drug addicts and allegedly committed robberies together.

About their modus operandi, police said in a statement that the two hid near some bushes at the start of the flyover and waited for any motorcycle to slow down near a speed bump. As soon as Naresh Kumar and his mother-in-law slowed down, they were stopped by one of the accused, who demanded money and some documents from Naresh at knifepoint.

Another man held

In another case, a 23-year-old criminal was arrested after police chased him for almost three kilometers. Parvinder Singh was carrying a reward of Rs 20,000.

Along with over half-a-dozen accomplices, Singh had allegedly stabbed to death a person on the road in Nihal Vihar in April this year. He had been absconding ever since.

On Tuesday, police learnt that he would be arriving at Subhash Nagar to meet someone. A trap was laid and Singh was soon seen on a motorcycle. But as soon as he sensed police presence, he sped away. A chase was launched and he was finally intercepted.
