Just ahead of Assembly elections, the Jammu and Kashmir Police on Friday claimed to have busted a Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) sleeper cell planning to carry out subversive activities in Srinagar.

A police spokesperson said acting on specific inputs regarding the activities of the sleeper cell of the outfit active in Nowgam-Chanpora areas on outskirts of the city, the police arrested two militants including a driver of a private school Mohammad Irfan Haroon and Shakeel Ahmad Bhat.

“Three AK 47 rifles, 14 pistols and two wireless sets were recovered from them. The duo was part of LeT sleeper cell that were planning to carry out subversive activities in Srinagar,” he said. “A case has been registered and investigations are going on and more arrests are expected in the case.”

Meanwhile, security forces averted a major tragedy by defusing an improvised explosive device (IED) in Shopian district of south Kashmir.
