Police have arrested three men in their early 20s on the suspicion that they murdered a habitual offender near MG Road on May 18, 2014.

Police gave the suspects’ names as Gopinath, 21, Manigandan, 22, and Manigandan, 24, all construction labourers from Bharathinagar.

On May 18 around 2 am, while walking near Bescom office on MG Road, the trio heard someone crying loudly. When they went to check what had happened, they found that a man—later identified as Venkatesh—stabbing his friend Vijay while the latter was having tea at a roadside shop.

They then pounced on Venkatesh, snatched his knife and stabbed him. Later, they took Vijay to a nearby hospital and went to the Ashok Nagar police station and made a complaint of assault against Venkatesh. Meanwhile, a bleeding Venkatesh, who had managed to flee the spot, was found dead near Ulsoor.

Passersby who saw his body called the Ulsoor police who registered a case of murder. An investigation by the Ulsoor police revealed that Venkatesh had been stabbed at a place which falls under the jurisdiction of Ashok Nagar police station, and transferred the case to them.

The Ashok Nagar police found similarities between the incident described by the trio and the murder of Venkatesh. They grilled them. The suspects allegedly confessed to stabbing Venkatesh but claimed they never knew that he had succumbed to the injuries.
