A 22-year-old man, who had allegedly murdered his mother as she had refused to pay him money to get his two-wheeler serviced, was arrested recently.

The suspect was identified as Girish, 22. He allegedly attacked and strangulated Mailavathi, 60, on September 17 at his VI Cross, Ejipura house, Vivekanagar police said.
Girish told the police that he murdered his mother as she refused to pay him Rs 10,000 to get the bike serviced, police added.

Mailawathi was a retired employee of Karnataka Seeds Corporation. She was married to Anand Rao, an agent with the passport office. The couple have two children - Girish and Yogitha. Yogitha got married two years ago and was staying in the same area. Girish had completed diploma and was unemployed.

Yogitha would often visit her mother as she would be alone once Anand and Girish went out. Girish wanted Rs 10,000 and requested his mother to pay him the money, but she refused. He again asked her to pay the money on September 17, but she refused. He pushed her against the wall. She sustained injuries and collapsed on the ground. He used her saree, tied her legs and hands and robbed her jewellery and cellphone. Later, he used the saree and strangulate her, police said.

He threw the cellphone in a drainage in Adugodi, police said. The murder came to light when Yogitha came to meet her mother. There was a dog in the house which had not barked when she was murdered. The dog’s silence indicated involvement of someone known, police said.

Based on phone call details, the police kept monitoring Girish’s movements. Later, they took him into custody and quizzed him. He confessed to the murder during the interrogation, police added.
