Anand, 35, a resident of Banaswadi, was arrested by the K P Agrahara police for kidnapping his brother’s eight-year-old son for ransom.

Incidentally, Anand had served an 11-year jail term in connection with a murder case and was released recently. On November 10, on the pretext of buying ice cream, he lured his brother Sundar’s son Ganesh, who was playing outside their house located on Magadi Main Road, and took him away.

The parents, unable to locate their son, approached the police and lodged a missing complaint. The next day, on November 11, the parents got a call from Ganesh that he was with Anand in Tirupati.

Anand told his brother that he had kidnapped their son and demanded a ransom of Rs 8 lakh, failing which he would kill his son. The parents immediately informed the police about the call, who tracked the mobile phone number to Tirupati.

While the police prepared to leave for Tirupati, they got information that Anand was headed towards Tamil Nadu. On November 12, they tracked him down in Poonamallee in Tamil Nadu, arrested him and rescued the boy.

During interrogation, Anand said that his parents had recently sold a piece of land and decided to divide the money among their grandchildren. He was against the decision and was constantly quarrelling with his parents and brother, demanding money. But they declined to pay him. A furious Anand then plotted to kidnap Sundar’s son, the police said. Anand was residing along with his wife and three children in Banaswadi.
