Rediscovering a City

Last Updated 25 May 2009, 12:24 IST

The Overseas Women’s Club hosted the launch of the 2009 edition of the In and Out of Bangalore at Leela Galleria recently.

Andrew Hendrian, the General Manager of the Leela Kempinski, who did the honours, said “without these books my wife and I would be lost.”

The book is targeted at people who have just relocated to the City.

Stacy Strawbridge, the newly elected president of the OWC and a former resident of Kansas, USA said, “the book is very useful when you are craving for the taste of your home country or trying to find a school for your children.”

Chances are that somebody from the OWC is bound to have had the same experience.
This is where the In and Out book comes in, she added.

Sushela Thomas, the managing trustee of the OWC, explained how the guide was born.
She described that the book started out as an advice one woman passed on to another, which was then written on paper, photocopied and passed around until somebody suggested that they ought to publish a book. This book, which came to be known as In and Out of Bangalore became a sort of Bible for all those who had relocated to Bangalore.

“Most of us carry it around for the first couple of months,” said Strawbridge speaking about the importance the guide has for expats and NRIs.

Urging those who had gathered to buy a copy, those who spoke at the event said that the OWC supports many charities and the proceeds from the sale of In and Out of Bangalore would go towards supporting them.

Paintings from the Rightlines Gallery were displayed at the event.

Denis Haton, the project manager of the In and Out book, told the gathering
that 10 percent of all art sale proceeds go to charity.

The evening had a little bit of everything; charity, fun and networking.
