Govt evicts 363 ex-MPs from official residence

The Centre on Monday told the Supreme Court that it has achieved a “tremendous feat” by ensuring that 363 out of 374 defeated MPs have vacated their official bungalows in Lutyen’s Delhi.

A bench of Chief Justice H L Dattu and Justice A K Sikri disposed of the matter, which it examined suo motu while acting on a letter written by former comptroller and auditor general Vinod Rai.

Appearing for the Centre, Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar submitted that Lalu Prasad, who kept occupying 25, Tughlak Road type VIII bungalow on the basis of his continuing treatment at AIIMS and his grand-duaghter’s education, has been asked to vacate the premises.

With regard to former prime minister P V Narasimha Rao’s son holding a bungalow to keep memorabilia of his father, the law officer said he has also been asked to leave the residence.   “This is not an alarming situation.

There are one or two stray instances. For one or two houses, we shall not be wasting our time,” a bench comprising Chief Justice H L Dattu and Justice A K Sikri said, disposing of the matter.
