Yoga can help in checking obesity that has become a major problem in developing economies like India, according to health experts.

As per to WHO, Obesity has reached epidemic proportions globally, with at least 2.8 million people dying each year as a result of being overweight or obese.

India has about 30 million obese people and it is predicted to double in the next 5 years, as per the Obesity Foundation of India.

"Today is anti-obesity day and this can be an apt platform for the people to take up yoga to free their life from diseases," BrahmYog Founder Manisha Kharbanda said.

The yoga practitioner must follow a systematic approach for reducing body extra fats both in internal organs and elsewhere, Kharbanda said.

Sachin Yadav, a doctor at Indian Super League's Kerala Blasters Football Club said: "The first step towards obesity-free life is awareness and then maintaining a healthy lifestyle."

Researches over the years have shown that yoga has tremendous capabilities to deal with obesity and related problems. Not only it improves lifestyle, but increases the metabolism and thus higher energy level, Yadav, who was the medicine consultant with the Indian football team, added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become the new poster boy for the promotion of yoga and the world has turned its attention towards this ancient Indian knowledge.

"Yoga embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well being," Modi had said in his recent address to the UN General Assembly.
