A book binder in south Delhi’s Govindpuri allegedly raped a woman thrice on Tuesday before she managed to escape from the ordeal and inform police. Police said the 50-year-old accused has confessed to the crime and sent behind bars.

The 24-year-old woman was working at Abdul Asfaq’s book-binding shop for the last few weeks.

Police said the woman had been living with her husband in lane number 7 of Govindpuri. Since her husband had been falling sick very often of late, she was forced to look out for a job.

It was during this search for a job that a friend brought her in contact with Asfaq who readily offered to employ her at his shop in Govindpuri. Once the woman joined work, Asfaq allegedly tried to get close to her.

Quoting the complainant, a police officer told this newspaper that Asfaq began trying to get close to her by regularly picking her up from her home in his car.

That soon turned to car rides to different parts of the city. The woman told police his behaviour did not appear suspicious to her till the actual crime.

It was during one such trip on Tuesday that he allegedly took her to an empty flat in south Delhi’s Madangir.

“She was restrained by him in a room for five hours and raped thrice,” said the officer.

Once the woman was allowed to go free after a warning not to reveal the incident to anyone, she went straight to her home and told everything to her husband who accompanied her to Govindpuri police station on Tuesday night.

Police said the woman was sent for a medical examination which confirmed rape. Her statement was taken after which Asfaq was booked for rape.

Police raided his house in Khanpur during the wee hours of Wednesday and he was arrested.
