Paying tribute to a legend

Married for more than two decades, Sumalatha and Ambareesh are still one of the most sought after couples of Sandalwood in Bengaluru’s party circuit.

He’s the ultimate gregarious hero of the Kannada cinema and she’s touted to be the fount of all his effervescence.

This was evident when the couple recently performed at the cultural evening during Dr Rajkumar’s Memorial inauguration, in the City, recently. The couple grooved to the song of ‘Nee Bandu Ninthaga’ from Dr Rajkumar’s ‘Kasturi Nivasa’ which also happens to be Ambareesh and Sumalatha’s favourite song.

Ambareesh is back on his feet after a bout of illness and found time for the event despite being in the thick of all political action. He was more than thrilled when people told him how much they enjoyed seeing him back in full form.

“The two of us (Sumalatha and I) have been acting and performing all our life. This is the first time I performed live after my recovery. After a quick two-day practice session, we did a small something on stage. It was appreciated both by the people and the Rajkumar family,” reasons Ambareesh whose film ‘Ambareesha’ released last recently.

Sumalatha confesses that she was in London when they got an invitation to attend the inauguration of Dr Rajkumar’s Memorial but she was taken aback when she and Ambareesh were asked to perform. “We had very little time but we have performed and acted together many years ago, so it was special come together with Ambareesh on stage once again,” she says. Sumalatha says more than the experience of performing together it was the occasion that made it a memorable one.

“It was our way of paying tribute to a legend and Dr Rajkumar has always been an inspiration,” she adds.

Sumalatha says whenever they have a get-together with friends, they always have a round of ‘Antakshari.’

“We would also end up singing ‘Nee Bandu Ninthaga’ from ‘Kasturi Nivasa’ since it is one of our favourite numbers,” she adds.

Sumalatha works on projects whenever she has some free time and is currently working on a Kannada project where she plays the character of an activist who fights for issues related to women’s rights. “I thoroughly enjoyed working on this role.

It is not always that I get to work on subjects that are of interest to me. But this project deals with issues that are close to my heart. A lot of what I believe figures in the project,” she signs off.
