Winter sets in, 7 killed in UP due to fog

Temperature in most parts of North India dipped below 10 degrees Celsius and cool winds swept across the region while seven persons lost their lives in Uttar Pradesh in an accident caused by poor visibility due to fog.

Several trains in UP were running upto 12 hours behind the schedule due to fog, which also adversely hit flights.

Shilma recorded its coldest night of the season.

Delhiites woke up to a chilly morning today with the minimum temperature at 8.8 degrees.

Humidity in the air was recorded at 90 per cent till 8.30 AM, Meteorological department said.

The maximum temperature settled at 28.9 degrees, five notches above the season's average.

In UP, dense fog has taken several parts of the state under its grip.

According to reports, seven persons were killed and three injured as the van in which they were travelling collided with a truck in Dhampur area of Bijnore district last night.

The lowest minimum temperature in the state was recorded at 2.1 degrees in Muzaffarnagar.

In Himachal Pradesh, capital Shimla experienced the coldest night of the season with mercury dipping to 2.2 degrees.

The high altitude tribal areas and mountain passes shivered under arctic conditions with mercury staying five to thirteen degree below the freezing point.

In Punjab, Ludhiana was the coldest place today with a low of 2.7 degrees. Biting cold waves swept most places in Punjab and neighbouring Haryana.
