It was a double bonanza for Tamil superstar Rajinikanth's fans on Friday. They not only celebrated the actor's birthday but also watched his action-packed film “Lingaa”.

Die-hard fans thronged theatres since Thursday night to watch the film. They marked the occasion with boisterous celebrations, including distribution of sweets, burning of crackers, launch social welfare initiatives and offering special prayers for their idol.

The actor plays a double role in the film opposite Sonakshi Sinha and Anushka Shetty.
Posters and banners of Rajinikanth adorned the walls in Chennai and other districts of the state, with followers organising special “poojas” in various temples for him.

Some fans were seen pouring milk on Rajinikanth's cut-outs in theatres where “Lingaa” was screened. The tickets had been sold out two weeks in advance. In his career spanning more than four decades, this was the first time a Rajinikanth film was screened all over the world on his birthday.

Several auto-rickshaw drivers in the city decorated their vehicles with the actor's posters and a sticker with the 64 number at the front of the three-wheelers.

“Lingaa” is regarded as one of the most significant films in Rajinikanth's career, having been produced by one of the best and oldest friends, Kannada producer “Rockline” Venkatesh.

DMK president M Karunanidhi greeted the actor over phone.  In a string of tweets, Rajinikanth first thanked Modi, saying: “My heartfelt thanks to you dear @narendramodi ji, for your thoughtful birthday wishes amidst your busy schedule, Warm regards.”
“To the ones who mean everything to me... MY FANS... from all over the world who wished me today...THANK YOU #touched. God bless.”
