Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Abhishek Goyal has received a number of threatening messages on his Twitter account, following the arrest of pro-IS Twitter handler Mehdi Masroor Biswas by the City police.

The DCP received the first threat message on Saturday at 8.28 pm, which said that revenge was in store. Minutes later, more such tweets were received on his account @goyal_abhei. The DCP kept receiving similar tweets till Sunday night.

Most of them either vow to take revenge against Goyal for the arrest of Mehdi or sympathise with Mehdi. Some of them even express solidarity with Mehdi. It is not immediately known who tweeted the messages and if they originated in India. “We have taken it seriously,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Hemanth Nimbalkar. “We are studying the follower network to ascertain the details,” Nimbalkar added.

One of the pictures received by Goyal shows an IS ultra getting ready to behead a man. It also shows the beheaded body of a man, with blood all over the ground. Another of the profiles shows a man wearing a mask. Two profiles show weapons.

The police suspect that some English-speaking terrorists with whom Mehdi regularly tweeted may have sent such threats. Considering their content and nature, the tweets may have originated in those places where IS terrorists are active, added the police.

A senior officer did not rule out the possibility of someone playing mischief. When contacted, Goyal chose not to comment.
