Official takes on corrupt contractors

Exposes shoddy work, video becomes hit online
Last Updated 20 December 2014, 04:08 IST

A fearless woman official has exposed corruption in civic projects and publicly lambasted contractors and others involved.

A video purportedly showing the Bulandshahr district magistrate B Chandrakala admonishing the contractors in public went viral on the social media and registered hundreds of likes.

“You should have some shame. It’s public money,” the district magistrate was heard telling contractors and junior civic officials when she inspected the construction of roads in Bulandshahr a few days back.

The DM found that the
interlocking tiles used were sub-standard. Their quality was so poor that they could be broken with bare hands, reports said.

“I will send you all to jail. Only then will you realise your fault. Its really shameful on your part to misuse public money,” Chandrakala was heard telling the contractors.

Erring officials
She later sent a report to the government recommending action against erring officials, including Bulandshahr municipality chairman Pinky Garg.

Incidently, Pinky Garg is the wife of local BJP leader Hitesh Garg.
It was alleged that the tiles was supplied by the firm owned by Hitesh. The DM has also recommended seizing the financial powers of the chairman Pinky Garg.

Chandrakala, who hails from Andhra Pradesh, is known to be an upright officer. Sources said she was abroad when she was transferred to Bulandshahr from Mathura district, and took the charge of the district online.

Allegations denied
Municipality chairman, Pinky Garg, however, refuted the allegations of corruption.

“It is not the duty of the chairman to stand on the site of the work. It is the responsibility of the technical staff of the municipality,” she said. Hitesh Garg was not available for comment.
