Auto driver admits to killing 10 women

Mahananda Naik, 40, who drove a rickshaw has so far admitted to killing 10 women over the last 15 years, but the figure could be much higher, police said. All his victims were below 30, a vital detail that explains police negligence in tracing the women, though their families had reported them missing.

By late Sunday the police managed to recover the remains of 5 victims from locations across Goa. DySP Serafin Dias who is in charge of the case said, “Naik, a father of a two-year-old, appeared totally normal and had allegedly killed the women purely to divest them of their jewellery. He lured them with the promise of marriage.” The police suspect the victims were also sexually assaulted.

Christened the “dupatta killer” by the local media for his use of the scarf to strangle his victims, the driver’s disclosures have shocked even his parents whose home in Shiroda, North Goa was burnt down by angry villagers. His wife daughter have been taken into safe custody by a women’s organisation.

The police stumbled upon the alleged serial killer last month after they recovered a cellphone from the last victim killed in January this year.
