Govt ignoring food security: Baraguru

Last Updated 05 January 2010, 19:48 IST

At a seminar on ‘Impact of Price Rise on Common People’ organised by Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Thinkers Forum on Tuesday, he said that the government’s continued focus on development has hurt the common man, who is struggling with rising food prices.

“Is spending crores of rupees on religious organisations ‘development’? The government should concentrate on implementing the provisions of the food security, as soon as it comes into force,” he said. He commented that Central government needs to provide a subsidy of Rs 1,28,000 crore to ensure food security, but only Rs 58,000 crores is being spent at present. However, the corporates have been getting away with a subsidy of Rs 4,28,000 crore, he added.

The State government follows the policies of the Gujarat government and treats it as a role model, but in the last four years in Gujarat, four thousand farmers have died, he added.
