K M Raman of Tumkur has been selected for the Shantala Natya award. The Jakanachari award goes to well known sculptor R Veerabhadrachar of Bangalore. Chokkamma of Mysore has been selected for the Kanaka-Purandara award and the Gubbi Veeranna award goes to H T Urs of Koppal. All awards carry Rs 3 lakh each and a memento.
The cash component of these awards has been increased to Rs 3 lakh with effect from 2008. In the previous year the amount was Rs 1 lakh.
Academy renamed
The Government has named Karnataka Janapada and Yakshagana Academy as Karnataka Janapada Academy. The government changed the name of the academy as it set up a separate academy for Yakshagana.
The government has also renamed the Kanaka - Purandara award as Nijaguna - Purandara award. The government has instituted a separate award in the name of saint poet Kanakadasa.
