A 15-year-old girl was killed and three others were injured after a speeding truck rammed into the autorickshaw they were travelling in at Jyoti Nagar in north-east Delhi on Saturday morning, police said.

The deceased has been identified as Aarti, a resident of Shahdara in north-east Delhi. She was travelling with her mother and an aunt to a relative’s house in east Delhi’s Krishna Nagar when the accident happened. The autorickshaw driver was also injured.

“They were at a traffic signal in Jyoti Nagar when the speeding truck hit the autorickshaw from behind at 6 am. The impact was so severe that the autorickshaw was reduced to mangled heap of metals,” a police officer said.

Locals took the injured people to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital. Aarti suffered head injuries and died during treatment. Her mother Rachna and aunt Savita were shifted to another hospital by relatives. The autorickshaw driver is undergoing treatment at GTB Hospital.

The truck driver, Jamshed, who hails from Alwar district in Rajasthan, was overpowered by locals and handed over to police. A case has been registered with Jyoti Nagar police station. The truck was carrying bricks to a construction site in Noida.

Jamshed faces charges under sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 279 (rash driving) and 337 (causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code.

Police have seized the truck and the autorickshaw. “The truck driver was speeding and jumped the traffic signal at Jyoti Nagar,” the officer added.

Aarti was a class 10 student of a government school in north-east Delhi’s Loni, and lived with parents and an elder brother.
