These farmers were arrested in Davangere while they were holding a ‘jail bharo’ agitation demanding the government to re-open the Bhadra Sugar Factory, and drop the proposal to acquire nearly 180 acres of fertile land at Doddabathi near Davangere for formation of residential layouts.

While 72 farmers were lodged in the Dharwad Sub-jail, 38 were put up in the Bellary Central Jail. Chief Minister’s B S Yeddyurappa on Thursday had stated that all the cases against farmers relating to these agitations would be withdrawn.

As the order of the release of the farmers reached the respective jails on Thursday night, all the farmers were released on Friday morning. The government had arranged for buses to take the farmers back to Davangere.
