To give further boost to India focus activities, Chinese telecom gear maker Huawei on Thursday unveiled its research and development (R&D) campus in Bengaluru, its biggest outside China, with an investment of $170 million.

Huawei Technologies Vice-President Joy Zoho told Deccan Herald that the centre will help the company to develop world-class products, platforms, and solutions.

“The India R&D facility will help us build world-class platform development, software solutions and develop customer products. It will create future-oriented technologies and support the digital transformation of society. We want to be a global information and communication technology (ICT) solution provider,  and for that we need to strengthen our capabilities,” said Zoho.

The campus, spread over 20 acres, can staff 5,000. At present the centre houses 2,700
employees, almost all of whom are Indians.

Huawei India R&D center CEO Wilson Wang said the new campus is a giant leap in Huawei’s effort to tap the Indian talent pool for its global ambitions. “The expansion of this campus is a reiteration of Huawei ’s commitment to R&D and overall growth of the ICT ecosystem in India and around the world,” he said.

Besides developing cutting-edge software products and platforms in the areas of
IP-based data transmission networks, BSS (business support systems), OSS (operations support systems), terminal devices, and intelligent networks, the India R&D centre will help Huawei develop future technologies in areas of SDN (software-defined networking), cloud, mobile internet, Big Data, and digital services. The company, which has completed 15 years in the Indian market, said the R&D campus will be expanded as per requirement. Huawei has invested around $300 million in R&D in India in the last 15 years.

Speaking at the function, Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP) secretary Amitabh Kant said the campus will complement the technological prowess of India. Huawei also launched its multimedia branding campaign entitled ‘Huawei — 16 Years of Enabling Digital India’.

According to telecom analysts, Huawei’s focus on India can be seen as part of the company's commitment to contribute to the flagship 'Make in India’ programme.

Huawei India targets $2 b revenues by 2017
