6 accidents at level crossings; SWR asks public to be careful

Last Updated 06 February 2015, 18:45 IST

The South Western Railway (SWR) has asked the public to be careful at level crossings as six accidents have occurred at these places in the City and on the outskirts recently.

The public should not cross when the gates are closed, officials say. Doing so not only damages vehicles and injures their drivers but also destroys railway property.

There were six cases of road vehicles hitting and damaging railway gates, leading to ten-minute detention of various trains running in that particular section and an average four to five hours in each case.

Continuous damage

On January 21, at 1.20 pm, a lorry hit the gate at the level crossing number 4 between Yeshwantpur bypass and Chikkabanavara, damaging the gate. The next day, at 7.30 pm, a lorry hit the gate at level crossing number 25 between Dodbele and Nidvanda in Tumakuru section, smashing the gate boom.

A case was registered at the Tumakuru Railway Protection Force (RPF) outpost. Efforts are being made to track the absconding lorry driver, the SWR said.

On January 23, at 8.15 am, another lorry hit the gate at level crossing No 25 on the same route. Another case was registered at Tumakuru RPF outpost.
