Forgetting his mobile phones inside his Honda City car proved lucky for its owner as the phone location helped recover the vehicle within hours of it being stolen.

The vehicle was found parked outside New Delhi railway station. Police suspect the thieves intended to sell the car, but first wanted some cooling off period before they could sell the car outside the city. The parking at the railway station must have given them a good place to keep the vehicle for a day or two without drawing suspicion, said police.

Victim Paramveer runs a printing press and lives with his family in Todapur in east Delhi. Upon returning from work on Saturday night, he parked his car on the streets and went to his home.

He realised some time later that he had forgotten his two mobile phones in his car. He went down to fetch them, but found the car missing. He called the police control room number upon which a search was launched.

Upon learning that the two phones were inside the vehicle, police put them on surveillance. While one phone was found switched off, the other’s location was being shown at New Delhi railway station.

Police followed the phone’s location and found the car in the station’s parking area. The switched-off mobile phone was missing, leading police to believe that it must have been discovered by the thieves. The other phone which led to the car’s recovery was found under the car’s seat.

No suspect was found in the car or anywhere nearby. Police said they are scanning the CCTV footage in a bid to trace the thieves.
