How 'Bettada Kote' family assumed prominence

The relationship between the Bettada Kote family and the Wadiyars dates back to 18th century, with the matrimonial alliance of Lakshmammanni and the then king Immadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar.

Lakshmammanni (1741-1810) was the daughter of dalvoy Kaththi Gopalraj Urs from Bettada Kote. She was the third queen of Immadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, who showed exemplary courage during the tyrannical rule of Hyder Ali, till the power was restored to the Wadiyars.

Following the death of the king, there was a turmoil in the royal family, the advantage of which was reaped by Hyder. Not deterred, Lakshmammanni with the help of her trusted men and also the British, waged a silent battle against Hyder and also his son Tipu Sultan.

After the fall of Tipu in 1779, Lakshmammanni succeeded in reclaiming the authority to the throne and also the kingdom that was under Hyder earlier. It was facilitated by the adoption of the four-year-old boy Mummadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar in the same year (1779).

M Ramarao in his book ‘Mysoorina Rajyalakshmiyaru,’ that was also a textbook for middle school students from 1942-44, has given a detailed account of three Wadiyar queens including Lakshmammanni who contributed to the welfare of the Yadu dynasty.

The other two queens were Devajammanni and Kempananjammanni, popularly known as ‘Vani Vilasa Sannidhana,’ mother of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar.

Mummadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar who was also childless, adopted Chamarajendra Wadiyar X from the Bettada Kote family as his son. Chamarajendra Wadiyar was the 23rd ruler. Now, Yaduveer belongs to the same lineage, as his father Swarup Anand Gopal Raj Urs is the great grand nephew of Chamarajendra Wadiyar.

Pramodadevi Wadiyar told reporters on Thursday, “There could be nobody who hasn’t heard of Maharani Lakshmammanni. She played a crucial role in restoring power to the Wadiyars.”
