In the coming days, people living in south Delhi will have a say on how development work is being carried out by the civic agency in their respective areas.

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation is all set to form resident ward committees (RWCs) comprising locals, officials and councillors to tackle issues affecting a particular area.

The proposal is likely to be presented in the corporation’s Standing Committee meeting on Friday.
According to the proposal, the area councillor will have to take into account the
recommendations of the Resident Ward Committeesbefore carrying out development work.

“There will be nearly five members in a RWC who will inspect an area for a development work and also make a blueprint on how to implement such policies,” said an official.

“The RWC will be headed by the area councillor,” the official  added.
Also, officials from construction department and Department of Environment Management Service (DEMS) will be part of the RWCs, he said.

But this does not imply that Resident Welfare Association will become ineffective, the official said.
“On the contrary, the RWA will be working in tandem with the RWCs,” he added.
According to the proposal, the RWC will be allocated Rs 30 lakh per month per ward.
“The RWC will meet once every month and its members will be given Rs 1,000 as remuneration,” the official said.

The development programmes will be carried out on the recommendations of the RWC and the work done will be reviewed after every monthly meeting,” he added.

Mayor of the civic agency will also monitor the functioning of these RWCs, the official  said.
This scheme was first introduced by the unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi in 2011.

A year later the corporation was trifurcated into North Corporation, East Corporation and South Corporation.

“Yes it was proposed by the unified corporation, but the South Corporation is implementing it for  the first time,” said the official.
