Triple-riders hit by truck, woman dies

A 22-year-old woman died and her two relatives sustained serious injuries after their motorcycle was run over by a truck in south Delhi’s Sarita Vihar late on Sunday night.

Police said it was unlikely the two women pillion riders were wearing helmets while tripling on the motorcycle.

The truck involved in the accident was impounded by police from the spot. Its 44-year-old driver Raj Kumar, a native of Panipat in Haryana, was caught by the public and handed over to police.

Police said a medical examination did not point to alcohol in his blood. Kumar has been booked for rash driving and causing death by negligence at Sarita Vihar police station.

The dead woman was identified as Shilpi, a resident of Sant Nagar in Old Faridabad. She lived with her husband Govind, 24, and his 14-year-old sister Babita. Govind works as a clerk with a local court in Faridabad. The three were returning home after meeting Shilpi’s parents in east Delhi’s Ganesh Nagar.

The accident took place at about 11 pm on Sunday near a traffic signal in Ashram area. Police said that Govind and his sister immediately fell off the motorcycle after being hit. Shilpi, however, was dragged for about 50 minutes by the truck before the vehicle came to a halt.

“Shilpi was seated behind Govind and Babita. She was trapped underneath the truck’s wheels and was dragged along with the mangled remains of the motorcycle,” a police officer told Deccan Herald.

Locals informed police and rushed to help the victims. Shilpi was declared brought dead at a nearby hospital whereas the two injured persons are undergoing treatment. Police said they are out of danger.

The officer said the accident site bore a horrific look and no helmets were found at the spot. “The women were likely not wearing helmets,” he said.
