An employee at a jeweller’s shop in north Delhi allegedly made away with Rs 28 lakh worth of gold that he was directed to be delivered to another jeweller.

Police said raids have been conducted at his residence in Delhi and native village in Bihar, but to no luck.

The accused Mukesh, 32, had been working at a jewellery shop in Kucha Mahajani area for past four years. The shop owner Subhash Khandelwal had trusted him to deliver cash and jewellery to his clients.

On Friday, Khandelwal gave him about one kilogram of gold jewellery to be handed over to someone in the area. Later, the businessman to whom the gold was to be delivered called up Khandelwal to find out the reason for delay in delivery.

“He called up Mukesh on his mobile phone but found it switched off. He then approached us to file a complaint,” a police officer said.

A raid at his local residence revealed the house was locked from outside. His neighbours told police they did not see him again after he left for work on Friday morning.

A police team was dispatched to his hometown in Bihar’s Gaya district, but he is yet to be traced. Police are also looking into the possibility of any other person’s involvement in the crime.
