Achuthanandan walks out of CPM state meet

Last Updated 21 February 2015, 22:03 IST

Veteran CPM leader V S Achuthanandan walked out of a party state conference in a huff on Saturday to “protest” against the Left outfit’s attitude towards him.

The move triggered speculation of a dramatic break up between the CPM and the 91-year-old leader, who is the only surviving founder-member of the CPM in the country.

Despite the party’s central leadership starting fresh moves to pacify him, Achuthanandan chose to stay off proceedings at the conference during the second half of the day.

The veteran CPM leader’s walkout was said to be triggered by delegates’ criticism of his actions.

Achuthanandan remained indoors at house in Alappuzha for the rest of the day while party activists from different parts of the state started assembling around the house and raised slogans in a show of support for “comrade V S”. The state leadership, meanwhile, roped in leaders close to him to mediate.

Despite this, Achuthanandan cancelled a media interaction that he had scheduled for 4 pm. It is yet to emerge whether he will attend the meeting on Sunday.
