No proposal to increase retirement age of SC judges: Govt

There is no proposal to increase the retirement age of Supreme Court judges from the present 65 to 67 years, government said today.

"There is no proposal for increase in retirement age of Supreme Court judges," Law Minister D V Sadananda Gowda informed the Rajya Sabha in a written answer.

He was asked whether government plans to hike the retirement age from 65 to 67 years.
He said the Centre has approved a proposal for construction of additional office complex for the Supreme Court for the purpose of storage of record, office complex, auditorium, litigation hall and parking at an estimated cost of Rs 884.30 crore.

The strength of apex court judges was increased from 25 to 30 (excluding the Chief Justice of India) in 2009.

According to the Law Ministry website, as on March 1, there are two vacancies in the Supreme Court.
