It’s been 52 years since its inception and this place has not failed to attract customers. A tiny shop hidden behind a giant tree on the busy streets of Cox Town, ‘Thomsons Bakery’ has remained a cherished corner among many.

A sought-after bakery for plum cakes, this place has not subjected itself to any fancy makeover. It has remained a vendible place just for the unmatched taste of its sweet delicacies, mainly for its delectable cakes.

Having a tradition passed on from generations, this bakery has loyal customers who love the charm of this quaint little store. Started by Thomas in the year 1962, it is now administered by his family. His son CT Abraham, a charted accountant,  who is not trained in the bakery business says, “wants to preserve the tradition started by my father.”

He manages the business with the help of faithful employees who have been working in the bakery for over four decades now.

“My parents did not want this bakery to shut down after them. They wanted the tradition to continue. With the support of loyal employees and customers who appreciate our bakery items, the place is still running successfully,” says Abraham. A grilled gate, checkerboard tiles, glass case displaying a variety of cakes... this place portrays an image of modesty with great taste.

Their products are all freshly baked in a two-room factory located just down the road. The plum cakes they bake are extraordinary in taste and there are customers from all around the country and abroad who never miss buying them during their visit to the City.

So what is so special about their plum cakes? “They are baked with care in a traditional manner using the wooden fire oven.” It is one of the few places in the City that still uses the wooden fire oven. Abraham says, “It is this traditional baking that gives an added taste to our plum cakes.”

The bakery takes the credit of giving a nostalgic vibe to many families as their wedding cakes have been bought from here for generations now. Not so busy at other times, the place is bustling with customers during Christmas.

The shop is decked up in style for Xmas celebrations and sells ‘5,000 kg of plum cakes’ during this festive month. “The attachment towards this bakery is very emotional. It is a great feeling you get when you know that the items available here are sought-after by many,” wraps up Abraham.
