Shrushti hospital's 2 IVF centres shut

Last Updated 28 March 2015, 21:57 IST

The Health and Family Welfare Department on Saturday seized two branches of Shrushti Global Medical Care for malpractices and cheating.

The IVF centres at Mahalakshmipuram and Basaveshwaranagar were shut down following several complaints of malpractices against its proprietor K T Gurumurthy.
The department conducted an inquiry following complaints by patients against Gurumurthy. “There had been many complaints of cheating and misrepresentation against him and that is a reason why an inquiry has been conducted,” District Health Officer Rajni said. She added, “He had been conducting business falsely and we have asked the police to register a case against him.”

A three-member committee headed by Dr Veerabhadraiah of KMC submitted a report to the State government three months ago stating that the hospital had to be shut down. However, no action was taken.

“The move by the department to shut down the units on Saturday is a welcome one as it is a warning sign for others operating illegally,” Dr Veerabhadraiah said.

Gurumurthy, who is in custody, was arrested in January last year. “We received more than 20 to 30 complaints against him. We found documents supporting most of them to be true,” an official from the department said.
