BBMP woman worker killed as car rams goods auto

A 58-year-old female contract worker with the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) was killed and seven others were injured when the goods auto-rickshaw they were travelling by toppled after being hit by a car near Sukur junction in Kengeri on Wednesday morning.

The eight people, all contract workers with the BBMP, were travelling by a goods auto-rickshaw. Around 5.45 am, as they reached Sukur junction, Altaf, the driver, decelerated on approaching a hump. Just then, a car rear-ended the goods vehicle. The collision was so powerful that the goods vehicle was tossed up in the air and crashed onto the ground.

Passersby took the eight victims to the Rajarajeshwari hospital on Mysuru Road where Thimmamma was declared brought dead. The rest, including the goods vehicle driver, are being treated, said the police.

The car driver, identified as Venkat Ramanna, abandoned his vehicle and fled the spot. Police have seized the car, and based on its registration number, traced its owner to JP Nagar. They went to the house and arrested Ramanna there.

The injured are Sanjeevamma, 40, Shankar, 33, Muniyamma, 63, Lakshmi, 27, Muniyamma, 35, Asha, 27, and Altaf, 34, all from Kengeri New Town. A case has been registered at the Kengeri Traffic police station.
